Description and Background: High quality model time series of wind turbine icing has the potential to add significant value to the project development process for wind energy projects at sites with challenging icing climates, and to performance analysis and optimization of wind farms in operation. Time series can provide a rich view of how meteorological icing affects a particular site. Effective validation is key to enhancing capabilities to modeling the impact that meteorological icing has on wind turbine operation, to achieve such high-quality time series. This abstract dives deep into how operational wind turbines data can be leveraged with advances in atmosphere modeling to deliver more accurate time series. A comprehensive validation framework is developed and applied to a number of case studies. Results can be used as next steps for modeling improvements, model calibration and remodeling techniques, and to evaluate modeling uncertainty.
