Stephen Cookson – Vice President, Origination and Strategy, RES Canada.
Stephen has worked in renewable energy for over 16 years. Originally focused on project development, he led the management and closing of several utility-scale wind projects for RES across Canada, overseeing land acquisition, EA permitting, interconnection processes, stakeholder engagement, and project-level financial screening. Stephen then spent 3 years in Santiago Chile, opening RES’ first office in South America, before returning to Canada to lead RES’ involvement in the Wataynikaneyap project, a $1.9B remote transmission line project, in partnership with 22 First Nation communities. Now dedicated to origination and project finance, Stephen is focused on the C&I market in Alberta and leads RES Canada's power marketing, financial forecasting, and corporate PPA contracting efforts in that market. Stephen also supports RES' overall Canadian market development and leads commercial negotiations on off-take opportunities and strategic partnerships across the country, identifying and managing emerging opportunities associated with RES’ portfolio of utility-scale wind, solar, and battery storage projects. Stephen is responsible for analysis of Canadian energy policy and carbon market forecasts, including the evolution of certain politico-techno-economic drivers which create business opportunities for RES. He leads commercial transactions and manages investor and partner relations related to RES’ M&A activities in Canada, leading wind and solar asset sale and financing transactions. Stephen is a registered Professional Mechanical Engineer, holds a Project Management Professional certification, speaks English, French and Spanish, and lives in Montreal, Canada.
