Darren Suarez is the North American Vice-President of Public Affairs and Communications for Boralex, Inc. Based in Kingsey Falls, Quebec, Boralex has more than three decades of experience developing, building, and operating renewable energy power facilities in the United States, Canada, France and the United Kingdom.
Darren leads Boralex’s North American public affairs and communications team. The North American team manages the communication and public affairs needs of nearly two gigawatts (GW) of wind, solar and hydro resources, across 52 sites, two countries, five provinces, and six states, while developing an additional two GW greenfield project pipeline. Prior to joining Boralex, Darren was a Senior Director of Government Affairs at The Business Council of New York State, Inc. where, for eight years, he advocated for members on energy and environmental issues. Darren also spent several years lobbying for a diverse array of clients including multiple fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and trade associations.
Darren worked for the New York State Senate Majority where he advised members of the Senate Majority on environmental and economic development legislative and budget proposals. Negotiated legislation with the New York Assembly, Executive and external organizations. Managed for Majority Counsel Program the assemblage of the New York State Budget. Developed, amended, and negotiated economic development tax incentives.
Awarded in 2006, an Economic Development Service Award in recognition of work in attracting AMD to construct a $3.2 billion 300 mm-wafer fab in New York State. Coauthor of the 2005 amendments to the Empire Zone tax incentive program. Recipient of the 2005 New York Nature Conservancy’s Salamander Award for working to protect New York’s biodiversity. A joint recipient of the 2004 National Conference of State Legislatures Staff Chair Award for work as a primary author of New York’s Brownfield Cleanup Program.
In life: expert skier, qualified for the Boston Marathon, a beekeeper and a father of two daughters.
